Linguistics is the study of human language. We look at questions like:
- How did language develop?
- How is it able to create infinite new meanings?
- How is it learned?
- How is it represented in the brain?
- How do people use it?
- How does it change over time?
We do this by collecting data from many different languages, conducting experiments, investigating how language is used across different groups, and looking at texts that provide evidence about earlier stages of different languages. Together these methods provide a window onto a fundamental aspect of what it is to be human.
